Korte omschrijving: Shoulder Bursitis
Without the bursa, friction caused by movement would reduce flexibility in the joints.
Bursitis is inflammation of a bursa.
It is a common condition that often occurs when a joint is overused, such as when playing an instrument, throwing a baseball or painting a wall.
Tendonitis, Bursitis, and Impingement Syndrome are all related to overuse in the shoulder.
The shoulder is the most movable joint in the body. However, it is an unstable joint because of the range of motion allowed.
Oorzaak:Repetitive motion related to certain activities when the shoulder joint is overused, such as playing an instrument, overhead painting a wall, throwing a baseball and swinging a tennis racket or a golf club are other examples of repeated physical activity.
May be named after the profession or trade associated with certain motions of the joints.
- Stress or direct trauma/bumping or prolonged pressure to the shoulder joint, or abnormal shoulder joint position.
- May occur in association with other diseases or conditions such as gout, arthritis, diabetes mellitus or occasionally from an infection (Staphylococca or, rarely, tuberculosis).
- Normal wear and tear. Increasingly after age 40,
- Poor posture. When you slouch your neck and shoulders forward,
- Falling. Using your arm to break a fall or falling on your arm can bruise or tear a rotator cuff tendon or muscle or impinge a bursa.
- Lifting. Lifting something that's too heavy or lifting improperly, especially heavy overhead lifting.
- Repetitive stress. Repetitive overhead movement of your arms.

Anatomie: A bursa is a saclike membrane near a joint.
It acts as a cushion between the muscle and bone.
Two of theses filmy sac-like structures permit smooth gliding between bone, muscle, and tendon in the shoulder.
They cushion and protect the rotator cuff from the bony arch of the acromion
Pain is often felt in tip of your shoulder.
Bezoek huisarts nodig?:Be sure to seek medical advice if the are signs or symptoms or infection or symptoms (pain and stiffness) persist more than 10-14 days.
See a doctor or PT.
Zelf doen:If the cause is not infectious: Reduce inflammation! Relieve Pain.
Treat with conservative therapy which involves RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation),
Rest: Reduce/stop using the injured area for 48 hrs (Splinting or Slings).
Ice: Put an ice pack on the injured area for 20 min. at a time, 4 to 8 times per day. (Use a cold pack, ice bag, or a plastic bag filled with crushed ice that has been wrapped in a towel or for a more localized strain ice massage may be in order. Get a paper or styrofoam cup, fill it with water and freeze. Tear the lip of the cup back and use the ice to massage your elbow and forearms.).
Compression: may help reduce the swelling. Compress the area with elastic bandages, to help stabilize the elbow.
Elevation: Keep the injured area elevated above the level of the heart. Use a pillow to help elevate the injury.
